The Value of Trade Shows

Back in 2001 I attended my first ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair). I had just moved into a new home in Croton on Hudson, and I dragged my husband down to the Javits Center to be inspired, learn about new products, and create new vendor relationships.

This first show was so important. I met a couple who had a booth featuring really cool small-scale tables that could work in so many tight configurations. Everything was custom, from wood finishes, design, and paint colors. I was able to collaborate with them on designs for four tables at a beach home in Quogue for my clients. As a bonus, the partner was trained as a garden designer at the Bronx Botanical Gardens. We collaborated and drew plans and renderings for my new back and front yards. It was a match made in heaven.

I also met Jonathan Adler and his partner Simon, who were at a non-descript booth featuring his new pottery collection. It was easy to see that Adler was a diamond in the rough with a very cool signature style. I purchased a few of his pieces for myself and clients that day and am still thrilled each time I look at them in my home. Of course, he has gone on to merchandise, grow his offerings and showcase his unique style.

More recently I met a highly creative soul who creates furnishings with a modern take on the use of nail heads. Enter Peter Sandback and the Sandback collection. The first time he appeared with his line at ICFF, my team and I were completely blown away with the level of artisanship and ingenuity. Recreating a technique that has been around for centuries, Peter’s designs are innovative, whimsical, and absolutely original. This gorgeous black maple table with a waxed finish, is a prime example of the rigor and craft that Peter employs in each of his unique creations. He used over 11,000 nails to fabricate this elegant dining table. I can hardly wait to specify one of his creations for my clients’ weekend home!

Many of you are wondering about High Point. While I have taken a break the past few seasons due to COVID and family obligations, I cannot wait to get back to Market. High Point is truly in a class of its own. There is nothing like it in this country and I venture to say, in the world at large. I had the good fortune to be invited to speak at Market on three occasions. I never thought it was necessary to attend, since I had the NY market in my backyard. I was so wrong. The value of seeing a manufacturer in their own showroom, meeting your rep that you may only have known via email and phone, seeing new product and new finishes is incredibly inspiring.

I honestly believe in the value of attending trade shows. You are exposed to a huge dose of inspiration, novel resources, the introduction of new product being brought to market and the chance to establish wonderful relationships with makers and other larger vendors. Even if it means you must travel to explore new brands, the value of the experience is well worth your time and the expense.  Your resources expand and allow you to be more creative and indispensable to your clients.
